Synastry is something that interests many people that are interested in astrology because we as humans, often make relationships with other humans so it’s completely normal that we want to know more.
There are many articles online where you can find pieces of information about what’s good in synastry and what isn’t, and most of them usually talk about the relationship between Mars and Venus, but this isn’t the firm foundation for a long lasting relationship.
Mars and Venus can help in the “chemistry” part thing, sexual arousal, even emotions and taste but these two will not guarantee that something will last forever.
Luminaries and sacred marriage
Relationships between Sun and Moon, our luminaries seemed to be important since alchemy time.
“Above this circle is inscribed the word Rectificando, which means “by rectification” or setting things right, and the wings of the Ascended Essence spread over this operation as if to bless it. It is truly a sacred process. The alchemists often referred to the Conjunction as the “Marriage of the Sun and Moon,” which symbolized the two opposing ways of knowing or experiencing the world. Solar consciousness is intellectual and relies on rational thought; lunar consciousness is feeling based and taps into non-rational sources of information like psychic impressions and intuition. After this Marriage of the Mind, the initiate experiences an increase in intuitive insight and the birth of Intelligence of the Heart. This newly found faculty produces a sense of reality superior to either thought or feeling alone.
Conjunction is more than a simple marriage however. It is actually an alchemical crucifixion in which the substance at hand (or the alchemist) is nailed (or fixed) on a cross between the Vertical Axis of reality and the Horizontal Axis of reality. In the vertical orientation, Conjunction is the attempted union of the forces of spirit Above and matter Below. As can been seen in the Azoth drawing, Conjunction is really a turning point from working with the first three operations Below (in matter) and working with the last three operations Above (in spirit).
In the horizontal orientation of left and right, the Conjunction is an attempt to balance the masculine consciousness of the King with the feminine consciousness of the Queen. As can be seen in the Azoth drawing, Conjunction marks balancing point between the forces of the Anima (Soul) on the alchemist’s right side to the forces of the Spiritus (Spirit) on the alchemist’s left side. In fact, it is the alchemical crucifixion at the center of the vertical and horizontal realities that makes Conjunction the most significant operation in alchemy.
Images of horizontal Conjunction include the fruitful earth, sexual intercourse, rams and satyrs, double-chambered furnaces (athanors), glue or tape binding opposing entities, two streams coming together in one stream, Janus or double-faced people, people wearing crowns, and the hermaphrodite, Often engravings show the King and Queen in reconciliation at this stage, with Hermes (or Mercury) joining them an embrace or handshake. In some of these drawings, Hermes is shown with a wry smile or even with two faces. This is a subtle revelation that the Conjunction is really a good-natured ruse by the notorious trickster, who knows that both the King and Queen must die or sacrifice their identities in the marriage to produce the Child of the Philosophers, which is all Hermes really cares about.”
“Physiologically, Conjunction is using the body’s sexual energies for personal transformation. Conjunction takes place in the body at the level of the Heart or Copper Chakra. On the planetary level, Conjunction occurs when primordial life forms are created from the energy of the Sun or lightning.
Psychologically, Conjunction is empowerment of our true selves, the union of both the masculine and feminine sides of our personalities into a new belief system or an intuitive state of consciousness. The alchemists referred to it as the Lesser Stone, and after it is achieved, the adept is able to clearly discern what needs to be done to achieve lasting enlightenment. Often synchronicities begin to occur at this stage that confirm the alchemist is on the right track in his or her personal transformation. In society, it is the growth of crafts and technology to master the environment. ” (Source: here )
Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman, foreva-eva?
I think there many people that dream of this possibility, to find a partner you will marry and stay with for the rest of your lives. To some, this information sounds horrifying; to spend your whole life with just one person.
Marriage, regardless of Mars & Venus effects, is also work of luminaries, but also Saturn…because everything Saturn touches gives that special feeling of being responsible for someone, it gives much to work with and it all takes time, years
Actor Paul Newman and actress Joanne Woodward are one of the most long-lasting Hollywood marriages. Their marriage lasted from 1958. until Paul’s death on 26th September 2008.
So how is it possible? What makes synastry so good that two people can stay together forever without walking away from each other?
Before we go to the charts, I would like to find some quotes where they talked about their marriage, as they claimed their marriage was always very happy.
-from Youtube comments
While rehearsing for the stage play, “Picnic,” she met her future husband, fellow-understudy, Paul Newman. They were married on 1/29/1958, 6:00 PM, Las Vegas, NV and have two children, born in 1961 and 1965. Their marriage is one of the most long-lasting in Hollywood. When asked the secret of their contentment, Joanne replies, “Who’s contented? We may divorce next year. But we like each other a lot and have great respect for each other. We feel very comfortable together. We don’t believe in being together all the time. We spend about half the year together, and have nothing in common.” She, for instance, cares nothing about his race cars or politics and he has no interest in her passions, opera, and dance. But somehow, they make the relationship work. (Source: astro.com/databank)
Signs in the chart:
So what do we have here 🙂 Interesting situation, Paul has a Moon sign in Pisces (Joanne’s Sun sign), and she has Moon in Aquarius (Paul’s Sun sign). Both people having the same rising sign, even makes things a bit easier.
Let’s see hits. So application aspects are the ones you can see right away, and separation ones are the ones we see through time.
Paul’s Moon Conjunction Joanne’s Moon
Orb 6°46′ Separating
The Moon is considered one of the personal planets in relationship astrology and therefore it is the essential ingredient in it. Having conjuncted Moons may feel like we have finally found our soul mate, our emotional twin, that shares our need for emotional security and makes us feel like we’re home. Usually, a harmonic combination of Moon aspects is believed to bring good luck in intimate partnerships. Therefore, having Moons conjuncted or in the harmonic aspect is the ideal combination for a personal and close relationship, either romantic relationship or friendship. Emotional bonds that we form are possibly the most important ones in our personal relationships and when two people find each other sharing the same Moon, they have all the ingredients needed for it- understanding, empathy, and emotional support. To be somebodies home.
Paul and Joanne were definitely able to enjoy each others company and relax in the knowledge that they really are a compatible couple and there is almost nothing that could shake off that deep connection.
Synastry is fairly simple if we know what we’re looking for. Of course, Venus and Mars will be pretty important in the relationship dynamics, especially for creative chemistry and sexual chemistry, but Moon, Sun, Ascendant…this is the synastry gold to dig in.
After all, we do live by our luminaries – Sun and Moon.
Moons are pretty instinctive so sharing this placement with somebody gives you the power to understand this persona (and their inner unconscious world and feel their instincts, or to put it better; both of them know instinctively/intuitively what the other person needs to feel safe and sound.
Sometimes, they can even be shocked how easy this relationship is. It’s almost like they knew each other throughout some other times in the past. Of course, every relationship experiences tensions, ups, and downs, rises and falls, but the thing is…when people have conjunct Moons they will both seek peace and solace in the same manner. Perhaps that could explain why they spent 6 months away from each other without getting anxious in separation. Having two Moons conjunct in synastry is one of the most rewarding aspects of the relationship astrology.
Paul’s Moon Conjunction Joanne’s Sun
Orb 6°23′ Applying
Again, we have a really good combination for intimate, close or romantic relationship whether we’re talking about really essential friendship or a romantic relationship – or both at the same time. They both deeply feel they can give something really special into this union and really enjoy spending time together.
Having Sun and Moon in conjunction or any harmonic aspect gives these two people many things in common and the power to share some very sentimental and important life events together. It definitely feels like it was meant to be.
Since Joannes Sun conjuncts Paul’s Moon, we can perhaps conclude that she was more likely a dominant person in this union and the one believing that their identity is essential to keep inside the relationship. Especially for them to keep separate identities inside the relationship while still being together. Easy as it sounds- it isn’t. Many relationships fail because people lose their identity inside relationships. Short or long-term. Paul role in this particular aspect was one of the Moon. Giving emotional support which definitely contributed a lot to a higher sense of living and to follow her Sun given Heroic mission, to follow her ambition and to achieve her personal goals, especially goals that could concern Sun themes; a public life, career, life purpose, true identity, ego, etc. Paul as Moon probably played a great supporting role in Joann’s life.
As I already mentioned above, Sun and Moon are extremely important in astrology and our personal and synastry charts. This aspect gives a great mutual understanding.
It’s a sacred marriage in the alchemical sense that we mentioned in the very beginnings of this article. I warmly recommend reading and learning more on this particular subject.
Paul’s Moon Square Joanne’s Jupiter
Orb 5°53′ Applying
I know how everybody feels about squares in natal charts, and therefore apply the same thoughts into the synastry technique but honestly, we astrologers don’t mind seeing some challenging aspects in synastry charts. Why? Because squares are active and moving. They express physically in this realm and therefore, squares could be the most visible in our charts.
Having Moon in square to Jupiter in synastry can bring some difficulties and unwanted effects (but who says conjunction is guaranteed to play out well) such as ones concerning life philosophy, morals and ethics or language barrier even, but on the whole, having greater benefic planet Jupiter in connection to sensitive Moon – is a positive combination for intimate relationships.
They both feel alive when together, enjoy each others company and yearn for adventures. This combination could explain their desire to spend some time apart during the year (along with others of course). But even with spending time apart, with Jupiter Moon aspects there is a tremendous desire to explore life together, like living and adventures where you’re partners in crime. Going away on holidays in far places, traveling together and meeting different people, cultures and learning new languages could have been their thing. Paul here as Moon probably feels this union expands his philosophy of life and his knowledge, giving his life a higher purpose where he ultimately feels free.
Joanne also, as Jupiter simply knows that she brings huge happiness and optimism into his union and knows that Paul definitely appreciates it.
So where is the catch with the square then? Well just like with every Jupiter aspect, it’s very easy to overdo, or simply over-expand their feelings. But how much of a good is “enough”? Is there even a limit to it? Jupiter says no. Dream big, but not too big.
Morals and beliefs also play a strong role in this union, but above-mentioned aspects of luminaries make this a lot easier.
Paul’s Moon Opposition Joanne’s Neptune
Orb 0°23′ Applying
Another challenging aspect, but did it play in a bad way? Neptune is the planet of the ideal, perfection, great vision. It is also the planet of the highest spirituality level if he expresses itself in a positive way. If not, it is the planet of lies and deceit, confusion and sacrifice.
Well, sacrifice is present with both levels, except similar to the Pisces energy, once that we make Neptune “conscious” (lol), we are able to channel his positive traits and perhaps make sacrifices that actually make sense.
Anyway, when Moon connects with Neptune in synastry, two people may feel like they’re meant to be together. Definitely, they feel this is a spiritual union, something that carries the common ideal.
Of course, there is always a danger that Neptune’s veil of perfection will be pulled down and shadows will appear. Illusions and things that we imagined our lover to be; are falling down.
But here is something interesting; Neptune is also connected to films and photography, media and propaganda in general. So, it’s no wonder these two actors even played in movies together, and probably met on a movie set.
The danger with these aspects (if there are no others to hold it together) is falling in love with the illusion and quickly falling out as soon as that spark goes away.
Still, this aspect can be wonderful if both people are willing to stay honest and work on their relationship by accepting their true selves as much as they accept another person.
Paul’s Moon Sextile Joanne’s North Node
Orb 2°42′ Applying
Moon and the Nodes are both significant in the relationship astrology. Since Nodes are mostly considered karmic, this aspect points to a significant union. They both feel strongly drawn to each other with no knowledge of what exactly lures them towards one another. They definitely feel this union is destined and somehow written in the stars. And it really is. Aspects like this can point to a past (Moon) and Node (future-present goal in this lifetime) and their destinies were most definitely intertwined.
When you see aspects like this, either in friendship, family or relationship charts – know that your paths were meant to cross.
Paul’s Sun Conjunction Joanne’s Mercury
Orb 8°16′ Applying
Communication, communication, communication and (I can’t stress enough) communication!!
Listen, Mercury is extremely important. We can have so many harmonic aspects together and have squared or inconjunct Mercuries. Simply, we humans are very mental beings and without understand each others point of view and without having the freedom to communicate our thoughts and feelings to the other person, our relationships can easily break down. Without an understanding of another person’s point of view and the ability to communicate one’s own thoughts and feelings, a relationship can easily break down. With Paul’s Sun in conjunction with Joanne’s Mercury they have a great understanding of each other and they are definitely able to communicate on many different common topics that interest them. Occasionally, they can come to a disagreement and even argue, but Sun-Mercury makes them have that humanitarian respect for each others opinion without necessarily agreeing.
They also probably enjoyed shared hobbies and activities that would offer them some learning in the process. (sounds like acting and reading scripts as well)
These two people really enjoy talking to each other and hearing the voice of each other. Writing notes is common in this aspect.
Paul’s Sun Trine Joanne’s Jupiter
Orb 1°31′ Applying
A true blessing – Sun making a harmonic trine to our greater benefic planet Jupiter. Many astrologers say that this placement both natally or in the synasty gives good fortune and happiness, and of course, lots of laughing and good moments, expansion and growth. It is also said that this is the ideal combination for marriage as it gives shared philosophies of life and gives both people a pleasant yet shared journey of growth. Paul and Joanne feel they can do almost anything together, face any demon or difficult situation, always feeling good luck is on their side. Or that their union is kind of, should I say, protected by something higher. I bet it wasn’t hard for them to find each other – they just found each other in the same place at the same time. What a win and a great fortune, to find such love in a lifetime?
They are also one of the popular couples whos good vibes, optimism, and positivity have a contagious effect for everyone that surrounds them, and those people enjoy being in their presence, making them one of the lovable, not annoying couples. Again the subject of traveling and learning together is present with this aspect.
Sometimes aspect and planetary patterns start to repeat even making same or similar aspects from one chart to another – interesting to compare in long-term partnership charts, family, work or friendship charts.
Paul’s Venus Conjunction Joanne’s Saturn
Orb 4°44′ Separating
I fucking told you. Saturn is extremely (and I also can’t stress this enough) important ingredient in synastry charts if you’re looking for something long-lasting and committed. Sure, Saturn can take away that excitement everyone yearns for but it’s the ingredient needed for security needed for long-term unions.
Saturn is connected to obligations and feelings of responsibility towards another person. And we can see that this couple took their relationship seriously. No games.
Saturn is loyal and devoted, and Venus appreciates it. If they ever made problems – you can be sure they definitely kept them. Their relationship probably developed and slowly grew stronger over the years. They gave each other time to grow and that is what matters. To have the patience to wait. To build the relationship.
There are times when Paul (Venus) would like to enjoy life a little bit more, take it easy, relax and have fun, but he appreciates and learns from Joannes maturity and wisdom, her work skills and her knowledge of slowing things down to make it long-lasting.
Saturn is also one of the planets that’s connected to karma, so this aspect also confirms once again, that their story was written in the stars. Or if you want to call it like that- they definitely were soulmates. Saturn-Venus aspects are also good for any kind of partnerships concerning art or creative deep work.
As you can see, luminaries would be the most important in making a long-lasting relationship. Because of the Suns’ active principle and Moons passive principle. They are complementary to each other.
Here, in the synastry chart of Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman, we have no aspects between Venus and Mars surprisingly or no, but we do have a sextile between their Venuses.
I bet most of you would say that couple that has Venus squaring Uranus wouldn’t last, but this Hollywood marriage proved us wrong. Yes, of course, they had friction, just like any other couple, but separation from time to time was actually good for this combination, and it was definitely something that suited both of them.
Just remember, every couple is different and therefore has it’s own good and bad sides.
If you want to peek at another synastry article, a long time ago I also compared charts of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen and dissected their aspects. You will be able to see major differences, but relationships are not even comparable in some sense.
Even if you have the majority of these aspects in your chart – it simply doesn’t guarantee you that your relationship will be perfect with no ups & downs. Honestly, I tend to believe that thinking about relationships as perfection with no disagreements or arguments is bad. Well not bad, but it’s an illusion definitely since, as time passes inside the relationship, we switch roles; from lovers to mother and child, to siblings.
And even family argues and still sees each other the other day. Especially in siblings case, right?
It’s really helpful to learn by comparing and learning about others through their own lives (or at least what the public knows about them).
Happy Friday, day of Venus.
